Mulching: What You Need To Know and Why You Should Do It

After mowing your lawn, the grass clippings have to go somewhere. Most homeowners bag their grass clippings, but did you know that this is not necessary? Save your time bagging them. Instead, gather the grass clippings and leave them in place, using the mulch as a natural fertilizer. Read more below about mulching and how it can help your lawn.

What Is Mulching?

Any material that is spread on top of the soil to control weed and conserve moisture is called Mulching. There are two types of materials used for this process; organic and inorganic. Organic mulch materials consist of natural products such as crushed leaves, hardwood chips, grass clippings from mowed turfgrass and other plant material scraps from your yard. Inorganic materials are rocks, plastics or anything synthetic that will not help the soil.

How Does Mulching Work?

Not all scraps from your yard can be used for mulching. Organic materials that will decompose and enrich the soil are best. Mulch material is placed on top of the soil to provide the grass nutrients as it slowly decomposes, making it a natural fertilizer. This process can be applied at three different times; before planting, after the plants or seeds are planted, and after the plants are growing. Grass clippings are the most commonly used materials for mulching. Simply collect the shredded grass and spread it on top of your soil or grass. Finely cut pieces of grass are preferred as large clumps can damage the soil. You will need to have a suitable lawnmower to cut the grass finely. How Will Mulching Benefit My Lawn?

Studies show that mulching is highly recommended as it offers many benefits to your soil and the environment. Aside from not having to bag and dispose of the materials, which takes up your time, it also reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation and cools the soil during summer. Once the organic material that is added breaks down, it will help the soil improve its moisture, drainage and overall health of the soil. The decomposed organic material will serve as a natural fertilizer, keeping your lawn well fed. Some mulch materials help with weed control. Mulching also makes your garden look attractive, making the materials as garden design.

How Do I Get The Best Results When Mulching?

Best Results When Mulching

It usually needs very little care once the mulch is applied. It's one of the easiest ways to improve your lawn or garden. To get the best results, you need to know first what type of materials to use and how to do mulching correctly. For organic mulch, use fine shredded materials and evenly apply a thin layer of it. Spread the mulch the around thick spots. Do not apply mulch to the point that the grass is smothered. You will end up damaging your grass and soil if you put too much. This will lead to excessive moisture and can cause the grassroots to rot.
